They had held their ground at Gavrelle, near Arras, in the face of a big enemy push. My grandfather's pal, who he had joined up with in September 1916, fell there.

They marched back to Ottawa camp, near Mont St Eloi, on the 30th March. A draft of 321 men joined the battalion, to replace those who were missing. They marched behind the column.

The War Diary then continues "On arrival at Mont St Eloi, the Canadian Battalion in possession of the camp turned out their band and played to the men of this Battalion until the Canadians were clear of the Camp."

Lest we forget.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3390382704873671828.post-14371031778243387252007-11-11T10:47:00.000-05:002007-11-11T10:47:00.000-05:00Amen, brother. There are those as well who have passed away and those yet to be born. So this great responsibility comes to us as heirs of the past and trustees of the future. But with that responsibility there has come something greater still, the opportunity of proving ourselves worthy of it; and I pray that this may not be lost."

To me, this represents the heart of what I believe.Shaftesburyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15861594677240319702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3390382704873671828.post-65421000316749771162007-11-11T10:17:00.000-05:002007-11-11T10:17:00.000-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Shaftesburyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15861594677240319702noreply@blogger.com
