Anonymous II: classic liberals.

These creatures are easily spotted. They are loud, dumb and illogical.
They never able to explain their statements logically, for example it said that David’s is a racist. How the hell it can tell that just based on his comment. The comment is straightforward and sensible, it’s not.
Another example, these creatures say that Monarchy is undemocratic and never care about the welfare of their people, but the simple fact is all the worst shithole (pardon my french) on earth is republic. They glorified Athens as the birth place of the republican system, but they fail to tell us that Athens’s republic was established simply because the Athenian felt that no one can or should ever replaced their last heroic King’s position.
In my perspective in many ways liberals’ way of thinking is not so different from my dog’s, the only different is I love my dog, but these liberals; I like to cook them all.

I stumbled onto this site while looking for an image of EII. My first look was the article on the "Commonwealth@60". My reaction to the article was "what a bunch of crock." The Commonwealth has worked, survived, and thrived precisely because it has changed over time and reinforced with the great admiration that people in its member states have for its EII. Moreover, it served as a stabilizing element during the Cold War, or for newly independent, and well-behaved, former colonies. No other former colonial power can say that it has such a relationship with its former subjugates.

When I meet people who are from other Commonwealth countries, an instant connection exists because of this shared institution. Too bad its current incarnation isn't enough for some people.

This paper and the preceeding and succeeding ones offer the reader much of interest, such as the alternative proposals, the reaction to them and the thoughts of the "Old Commonwealth" on the "New Commonwealth". One almost wishes that some of the other compromises (e.g. having the Governor-General replaced by the President, not the King replaced by such an office) had instead come to fruition.

It depends on what you see the Commonwealth's function is. If you see it as a way of expressing a shared, non-American but Anglophone cultural inheritance, then you're wrong. In 2009 that's fulfilled in one way or another by the Royal Family - if not shared allegiance, than a shared interest in its activities and procession through modern life.

The Commonwealth does seem however quite useful as a tool of international cooperation and statecraft. It is a crossover between a chunk of the OECD and the "South". It is a clearing house for anglophone countries to keep "in sync" in evolution of changes to law, parliamentary practice, etc. And it is probably the only international conferences where the PMs truly relax and "shoot the breeze" - because there is no agenda. Loads of ex Commonwealth PMs who were sceptics have become fans after a CHOGM or two.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery - and look at the Commonwealth copies. But none of them work anywhere near as well, as the original.

The Commonwealth is never going to be "Empire MK II" serviced by Wimpys, Austin Minors and Marks and Spencers everywhere, with all tuned to the World Service. THAT possibility died with Heath and the EEC in 1973.

But for its modest objectives, I think the modern Commonwealth does its job fairly well.

I find it rather comical that the Democratic Party is trying so hard to associate Obama with Lincoln who was, of course, the first Republican President of the USA. However, readers of this blog might be more interested to know just how rabidly small "r" republican Lincoln was. It was his government which issued the unanymous (because there were no southerners in Washington at that point) condemnation of any effort to establish a monarchy in the Americas. This was, of course, aimed at the French effort to restore the Mexican monarchy under Emperor Maximilian. Republican clubs sprang up all across the country to raise money for the fugitive Mexican president and the Lincoln administration did all in its power to weaken the Mexican throne and to send money, supplies, weapons and even (unofficially) thousands of additional soldiers to bolster the republican forces in Mexico. Lincoln was a staunch republican and opposed monarchy wherever it existed.

Yes, I wanted to cheer his speech but then was a little disappointed by his interview on Glenn Beck in which he praised Jeffersonianism and said how much better the US Constitution was for starting out with the words "We the People..." whereas the Treaty of Rome begins with the phrase, "His Majesty the King of the Belgians..." However, that said, I am in agreement with his statement, in that interview which he associated with Jefferson, in the preference for de-centralized authority. I agree with his comment that the more remote power is concentrated the worse the decisions become and while I would not have his same taste in opening phrases for constitutions I would only say that I would oppose the Treaty of Rome being treated as a constitution at all.

My local paper printed a Times article today entitled "How Hollywood Won the War". It highlights how US studios take stories of enduring courage and ingenuity and twist the history to suit American patriotic tastes.
Citing the examples of 'The Great Escape, 'Saving Private Ryan' and 'U-571' it makes a nice wee quip of about the American take of WW2 being based on "an event that never took place, involving an American who was not there, and a machine which had not yet been invented".
Is it any wonder that there is a section of the American population that labours under delutions, such as the presenters on Fox News?

Gentlemen,

It is always easy to say you could do better when you're not the one standing up there doing the delivery. This is especially true when you can hide behind anonymity.

Of course, there are things that the MEP could have done better, but it still is a great speech.

That said, Mr. Hannan's status as a tory is highly questionable. Our editor has even asked how low tory can you be and still be a tory.

If you check out the interviews with Neil Cavuto and Glenn Beck, you'll notice that he flirts with American democracy. He even goes so far as to suggesting that "we the people" in a document is better than "His Majesty."

The vast majority of "Taliban" are Pashtuns who are fighting ISAF and the Pakistani forces because they're on their turf.
The Pashtu tribal areas extend across the border and essentially mean nothing to them, nor does the authority of the governments in Kabul or Islamabad.
Afghanistan was always something of a basket case and I'm sorry to say it probably always will be. In our era of non-state actors and persistant conflict, nation states are never going to militarily win a fight like the one in Afghanistan. A comparison to Hilter's Germany is fatuous. If Al-queda is contained, then to stay longer only risks a protacted fight with an uncertain goal. The long game is going to be won by diplomats and politicians, not soldiers.

We are there, not for ourselves, but for the well-being of other people. We are there to overthrow a monstrous tyranny, and ensure that said tyranny shall never come to power again. The Taliban are monsters, barbarians. They are people who throw acid on the faces of little girls who commit the 'crime' of going to school.
