It should be noted that the RAF's main predecessor, the Royal Flying Corp was founded 96 years ago next month, making the RAF-RFC the world's oldest airforce. 5 of the top ten aces of WWI were RFC pilots and 1 was from the Royal Naval Air Service, also folded into the RAF in 1918.
And 3 of the top 10 Great War aces were Canadian, 3 were German, 2 were English, 1 was French and 1 was South African.
In total, England had 601 aces, Germany 393, Canada 191, France 182, United States 123, Australia 75, Scotland 63, Austria-Hungary 49, South Africa 45, Italy 45, Ireland 33, Wales 22, Russia 19, New Zealand 13, Belgium 6 and India 1.
