Intelligent debate in Oz not a two way street
By David Byers (Convenor of ACM in Country, New South Wales)
Intelligent debate in Australia is not a two way street. On the one hand, you have the republicans who will never accept the will of the people with regards to the 1999 referendum, and will scream outrage at anyone who dares to express a view that is in defence of the Crown. On the other hand, you have those of us who support the Australian Constitution and the Crown with reasoned argument and respect. I ask all readers to visit this website (see link below); there you will get a very good idea what monarchist in Australia have been putting up with for years (see comments after article). You might like to express your own views.
Get familiar with the republicans “arguments”, it won’t take long. Yet in the early 1990’s this is pretty much all Australians heard because the internet was yet to be what it is today. Now we can hit back.

What disturbs me most of all is that the republicans believe they can get their way once, and never have the question arise again. But surely, by their own logic, if you can once change your constitutional arrangements in this way because of a majority vote, you can always do so. Why, should a monarchist majority form, could they not be forced by default to return to the Crown?
Either they haven't considered it, or it is probably in part because they have a disdain for all this democracy - as many people understandably do - once they get what they want with it.
I lost track of how many times the republicans dismissed the constitution and democratic voting in that comments page. Sad about the referendum, nevermind, just overturn the will of the people to fulfill an obsessive idealogically driven goal fueled my a nagging inferiority complex that says we cannot be our own country until we remove the Queen.
Additionally, Dear God, what happened to capitalisation and punctuation? These people have a vote and yet they spell 'through' 'thru'. I'm probably just getting petty, but stupid people frighten me.
