Loyalist Cemetery

On the shores of Lake Erie, in the Niagara Region of the Province of Ontario, lies the small town of Port Colborne.

Port Colborne, Ontario
In a ceremony this upcoming Saturday afternoon, a cemetery in Port Colborne will be officially designated a Loyalist cemetery.

Steele Cemetery
Writes Derek Swartz of the Welland Tribune:

[Jerry Fisher's] poking around will also lead to the designation of a Loyalist cemetery in Port Colborne on Saturday afternoon, the first such designated cemetery in the city. Steele Cemetery on Concession 2 is the final resting place of Aaron Doan, who resisted the independence-minded American colonists during the Revolutionary War and took up arms against them in the War of 1812.

As a UEL descendant and a cemetery hound I had to leave some sort of comment. That is one thing about living in Hastings County, there is lots of UEL history in the area.

Thanks for the tip, sir.

BTW, I've heard that there are areas where they speak like they did around the time of the American War for Independence. Wouldn't happen to be like that in your area?

If any of you scribes not living too far from Niagara have got the chance to go to the ceremony and take photos and report, that would be great.

J.K., I didn't realize you are from Norway so my apology for not clarifying the Hastings County area. Hastings County is approx 1.5 hours east of Toronto. The entire area teems with UEL descendants.

This highway, which is about 20 minutes from my home, takes you through the Loyalist area in Eastern Ontario:

When the apple blossoms are out in the spring it may well be the prettiest road in all of Canada.

A link to the historical plaques in the area:

As for the Niagra region, I'm sorry to say that is a few hours from here and I'm rarely in that part of the province.

Cheers!

My parents will be there. I'll ask for some photos.

Sirs, regarding photos,

My kind request was primarily directed to scribes of The Monarchist – on behalf of myself only, and not in some attempt to usurp an editorial role. Moreover, the ceremony was last Saturday. So it's a bit late to make photos of the ceremony now.

However, if anyone else has photos from the ceremony or would like to come up with other, related photos, that would of course also be appreciated.

Thank you very much.

;) Yes, well, had I paid more attention to the date of your original post I would have picked up on that too.

In any event on speaking with the folks I discovered that they had indeed been there but no pics though.

There are no new items on the local chapter web site unfortunately. At least none yesterday.
